Pros: Lightweight and easy to carry. The La Sportiva TX4 Mid is lightweight and easy to carry, but it also has a high upper and is waterproof to keep your feet dry on snowy approaches. While the TX4 Mid has a waterproof, breathable membrane, it is less warm than mountain boots. Perfect for summer goals. The Petzl Leopard crampons fit well in approach shoes and are lightweight and easy to carry. The Black Diamond Talus Gaiter is a low-top that, combined with the high-top, keeps snow and loose rocks out of your boots. This footwear combination is suitable for approaches to snowfields and non-technical glaciers.
Cons: The approach shoes are soft and will twist out of the crampons if you try to use this setup for steep, technical approaches on snow and ice. Similarly, this setup is not suitable for mixed climbing. The Leopard is a 10-point aluminum crampon that lacks the strength and point configuration for mixed climbing. Aluminum crampons are not durable and cannot be resharpened, so they are not the right choice if you don’t like taking your crampons out on rocky sections through the snow.
Use: Alpine climbing objectives that involve movement on fully technical terrain that includes glacier travel, climbing and some snow-covered gullies or easy mix of snow and rock.
Use: This premium kit is designed for technical alpinists who move fast and light and climb a full range of terrain, including rock climbing, technical glaciers and mixed climbing.
